A strong federal policy push and funding prioritization primarily led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and supported by agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has encouraged states to expand the peer support workforce as part of broader behavioral health system improvements. During this effort, SAMHSA released national model standards for peer support certification, establishing baseline expectations for training hours, supervision, ethics, and reciprocity across states. This marked a critical shift from fragmented, state-specific systems to a more cohesive, nationally aligned workforce framework that continues to evolve. Mental Health America of Nevada is developing a nationwide peer support network designed to expand access, standardize quality, and create clear pathways into the profession. This network will serve individuals across the country by recruiting, educating, training perspective specialists and connecting people with trained peer specialists who understand lived experience, while also creating scalable opportunities for those seeking to build a sustainable career through certification. In alignment with national standards and emphasizing workforce development, this initiative becomes both an entry point for employment and a support system for communities ultimately enabling people to help one another navigate challenges, strengthen resilience, and participate in solving their own problems at both the individual and collective level.
